Dancing with Dedication

    As a sturdy tree with deep roots in the past and sprawling branches toward the horizon, Ilocos Sur National High School stands firm, commemorating 123 years of growth, survival, and distinction. On March 22, as we meet for the momentous High School Day, we are not only celebrating the past, but we are also welcoming the ever-growing canopy of learning, unity, and tradition that continues to form generations of students.

    For weeks now, students have devoted their tears and sweat into practicing their most anticipated performance during the field demonstration. Every day of practice with utmost determination and coordination has become weeks of unwavering dedication that molded each move and every shape with utmost accuracy. The scorching sun and aching muscles became afterthoughts as they paved the way toward greatness. Now, as they take the field, their diligence and grit pay off, showing that each drop of effort was worth the train.

    Each of the props contained the spirit of togetherness, bringing plain objects into vibrant symbols of commitment and cooperation. The colorful flowers danced along with the music, their petals glowing with energy in the color of the passion of the artists. Hats flew around in the air, lending flair and excitement to every gesture, while converted bottles rang with the voice of determination and endurance. Flags fluttered high, decorating the field with a kaleidoscope of colors that represented the students' dedication to excellence. Each step, each spin, and each formation were a story, a story of determination, teamwork, and the passion to create something memorable. All those weeks of training, the practices that left them dripping in perspiration, and the aching limbs were worth it for this instant when everything they had been working on came together as spectacle. There was applause and merriment all around as people were swept away into the marvel of the acts, their smiles radiant with admiration and joy.

    Choreographers and teachers sat on the sidelines; their chests full of pride. As the last beats of the music fade and the echoes of cheers die down, the weight of the results becomes embedded in each student's heart like the setting of the sun after a long, exhausting day. Whether they are declared the winners or carrying the lessons of loss, every performer is a warrior who has struggled through sweat and sacrifice. To the victors, the trophy is but an image of their unyielding passion—shining like a star in a black sky. And to the vanquished, recall that even the strongest of trees must endure storms so that they can grow stronger. It was never about winning or losing, but about the process—for the laughter shared, the friendships forged, and the heart and soul devoted to every step.

A Day at the TLE-ICT Event

 

"Technology and tradition are not opposing forces; when combined, they create an innovative and inclusive future where creativity thrives, and local culture is celebrated."

    Last Wednesday, we were privileged to go to the front of the SPTVE building to attend an event organized by the TLE-ICT department. The event presented a range of activities, booths, and experiences that created memories that will last a lifetime. As soon as we got there, it was evident that this event was not only about learning but also about involving the participants in interactive, engaging experiences.

    One of the most fascinating tasks we came across was a task where we were required to make a small piece of wire traverse a circuit quietly. It sounds easy, yet it was tricky, and it made us wonder about precision, concentration, and patience—important qualities in today's ICT and technology world. This exercise added a lighthearted but learning-based component to the proceedings, demonstrating that education can be fun while refining essential skills.

    As we went on to visit the booths, we stumbled upon a jail-themed photo booth. It was an innovative and creative idea to welcome guests to enter it for a fun, themed photo opportunity. The innovative practice of having a jail-themed photo booth also reflected the theme of creativity and resourcefulness that was seen everywhere at the event.

    After visiting the booths, we went over to the NHB (New Health Building). This section of the event was really interesting as we came upon a group of students providing massages. It was a wonderful way to release tension and relax after all the events, and it displayed that the event did not just concentrate on technology but also on the health of the attendees. In addition to the massages, there was also a variety of local cuisine available. From the delicious empanadas to the popular Ilocos miki, the selection of food was not just tasty but also representative of the local ingredients and the local flavor, which promoted a sense of cultural pride and respect for the local tradition of cuisine.

    We didn't finish there; we walked to the rear of the gymnasium, where we discovered a quaint small garden with plants, flowers, and vegetables. This garden was a great model of sustainability and environmental consciousness, which are equally essential elements of ICT and technology today. It was great to see the way students were integrating nature into their learning process, pairing their technical expertise with a passion for the earth. This segment of the event provided a serene break from the hordes of activities, and it left us with something positive in mind regarding the potential to combine technology and nature.

    In addition, the ICT event also featured a short film about the Pagcor building, which provided a preview of the technology and innovation that are defining the future of business and infrastructure. It was interesting to learn how ICT is involved in different industries and how students are being introduced to such practical applications of their studies. This short movie emphasized the need to be current with existing technologies and appreciate how they influence society.

   Looking at the overall experience, it is clear that the primary goal of this event was to ensure inclusivity, creativity, and the value of local products. The activity not only highlighted the talent and imagination of students but also made participants realize how beautiful and valuable local customs were, be it in terms of food, culture, or community activities. The activity was a celebration of the students' varied talents and interests, with the TLE-ICT department creating a platform for students where they can learn, innovate, and express themselves.

    In my view, the real intention behind this activity was not just to showcase the students' diligence and creativity but also to remind everybody that being part of a community is about sharing, learning from others, and giving back to society. The event organizers and club officers really did a great job in organizing an event that was not only fun but also educational, and it's something that I will never forget. It was a day of learning, creativity, and belonging, and it was a great reminder of how technology and local culture can intersect in positive ways.

Overcoming Challenges and Embracing Growth: A Reflection on My Fourth Quarter

    Time does indeed fly, doesn't it? It seems like only yesterday that I was preparing for the tenth grade, and now look where we are, at the tail end of the school year. It's really true what they say—every end means the beginning of something new, and this year has definitely been that for me. Let me tell you about some of the things I've learned, the difficulties I've overcome, and the ways I've changed along the way.

    This fourth quarter has been all about diving into the world of computers. We’ve covered a lot, from troubleshooting computer systems (CSS) to setting up networks and ensuring everything is secure. Creating webpages using the MS FrontPage. It’s been incredibly interesting but also challenging at times. 

    One of the most difficult times was when all the teachers had assigned work all at once. Deadlines, quizzes, and tests were all crammed into a couple of days. It was so stressful that I even became ill from it. To add insult to injury, our class time was reduced, and we hardly had enough time to get everything done correctly. It was certainly a challenge keeping up.

    But it is said, as the saying goes, tough times build character. Despite all the obstacles, I managed to remain focused. I began to make schedules with great detail, breaking it down into exactly what I needed to do and when. And whenever I got stuck, I did not hesitate to seek advice from my teachers. It was not easy, but gradually, I began to get into the flow.

    Looking back, I’m proud to say that I’ve come out of this quarter stronger. I’ve learned valuable lessons about time management, resilience, and the importance of asking for support when needed. I’ve realized that with determination and persistence, even the toughest challenges can be overcome.

    As I anticipate the next stage of my educational journey, I am more prepared than ever. I'm armed with what I've learned this year and ready to face whatever senior high has in store for me. Who knows, perhaps the next quarter will be even more challenging and rewarding in terms of lessons and opportunities for self-improvement.

Holding On to Hope

"Even in the darkest moments, the smallest spark of hope can light the way forward."

    It's an overwhelming thought, honestly, to think about the future. Not that I don't want to dream; many times, I find it hard to see past the dark shroud that's been cast about me. I just feel like I have been left struggling for so long, just hanging in there day by day. Since I was a teenager, I have had thoughts of giving up. It feels like a weight on my shoulders, pulling down on me and making it hard to envision a time when the going becomes easy. Sometimes I wonder that dreaming is even worth it, for the future seems so out of reach. 

    But somewhere in the pitch-black shadows of despair lies a tiny ray of hope. Hope for the awesome possibility that things won't be this hard forever. Hope for the warmth of those who care for me, even when I am unable to care for myself. So, what do I see myself doing ten years from now? Some things I can say with some conviction, while others are a little cloudy. I hope to be in a better place. Perhaps by then, I will have found the courage to ask for help and start healing from the pains that weigh me down. Or perhaps I will have discovered passions and dreams that keep me wanting to fight another day.  

    Anyhow, I know it's going to be one tough road ahead; I just can't lose hope. My dream, my future, is to find peace and happiness, even if it is in the midst of darkness. Whatever the circumstances, I will hold on to that hope, for I reckon better days are possible—even for someone like me.

United for Equality: Building an Inclusive Society for All

    The theme "WE for Gender Equality and an Inclusive Society" demands shared responsibility in building a world where every person, irrespective of gender, race, or background, has equal opportunities. Gender equality is not merely equal rights for women and men, but the removal of barriers for all marginalized groups. Through the use of "WE," the theme highlights that everyone—people, communities, organizations, and governments—need to join hands to overcome discriminatory norms and systems.

    Gender equality is a basic human right that enables individuals to achieve their full potential. A diverse society celebrates diversity in all its dimensions, from gender to race to ability, and makes sure everyone can contribute to the fullest without fear of exclusion. Removing the structural barriers perpetuating inequality, including discriminatory laws and workplace bias, is the key to lasting change.

    The advantages of gender equality and inclusion go beyond personal empowerment. With equal opportunities to all members of society, communities prosper economically, socially, and culturally. As in a garden where every plant is encouraged to grow, a society where everyone is encouraged to thrive is robust and resilient.

    Ultimately, attaining gender equality and an inclusive society is a call to us all to act together. It's not somebody's job, but a shared task to build a world where everyone can flourish, unencumbered by discrimination. Only when everybody is empowered can we have a truly inclusive and equal society.
